AI Updates — 2026-07-17

Executive Takeaway

  • Kimi K3 is the day’s dominant model launch: a 2.8T-parameter multimodal MoE with a 1M-token context window; hosted access is live, while weights are promised by July 27.
  • Agents are moving closer to full work environments. Gemini Notebook can now execute code in a secure cloud computer, Dify ships a sandboxed Agent beta, and LM Studio launched a local-first agent for coding and document work.
  • Model distribution keeps broadening: xAI introduced Grok 4.5 while AWS made Grok 4.3 generally available through Bedrock’s OpenAI-compatible Mantle endpoints.

Major Updates

  1. Kimi introduces K3, a 2.8T-parameter frontier model — K3 uses Kimi Delta Attention, Attention Residuals, and 16 active experts out of 896; it supports native vision and a 1M-token context window for long-horizon coding, knowledge work, and reasoning. Kimi says full weights and the technical report will arrive by July 27, so “open” weights are promised rather than downloadable today.

  2. xAI launches Grok 4.5 — xAI positions its newest model for coding, agentic tasks, and knowledge work. The launch matters because xAI is pairing a new frontier model with a rapidly expanding coding-agent stack and integrations.

  3. NotebookLM becomes Gemini Notebook and gains native code execution — the standalone research product now gives each notebook a secure cloud computer for source-grounded analysis. It is live for AI Ultra and eligible Workspace customers, with Pro rollout planned over the coming weeks; Google reports more than 30 million users and 600,000 organizations.

  4. AWS makes Grok 4.3 generally available on Bedrock — the text-and-image model offers configurable reasoning, tool calling, and a 1M-token context window through Mantle’s OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions and Responses APIs. This gives enterprises another managed path to deploy Grok without adopting a separate API surface.

Open Source / Developer Tools

  • Dify 1.16.0 — launches Dify Agent in open beta with a Linux sandbox, Skills, reusable agent roster, workflow integration, and web-app publishing. Production upgrades require migrations, new services, and replacement of the development-default agent secret.
  • OpenClaw 2026.7.2 beta 2 — advances remote coding sessions, cloud workers, mobile automations, guided provider/channel setup, MCP session isolation, and gateway/cron recovery. It remains a beta.
  • LM Studio Bionic — a local-first agent for coding, research, files, slides, sheets, and offline voice transcription, with optional open-model cloud execution.

Watchlist / Rumors / Not Confirmed Yet

  • Gemini 3.5 delay reports: third-party reports say Google delayed the model after internal coding results missed targets; Google had not published a confirming product announcement at the check. Reuters report
  • OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta AI, Microsoft/Azure/GitHub Copilot, NVIDIA, ElevenLabs, Nous/Hermes Agent, and the remaining mandatory sources showed no additional high-confidence frontier launch worth promoting. Reddit returned HTTP 403, and public X search did not provide reliable logged-out momentum data; official YouTube feeds were checked as a fallback.
